Doxorubicin是一种具有抗肿瘤活性的蒽环类抗生素。Doxorubicin是柔红霉素的羟基化同系物，是从细菌中分离出来的。Doxorubicin插入DNA螺旋的碱基对之间，从而阻止DNA复制并最终抑制蛋白质合成。此外，阿霉素抑制拓扑异构酶II，导致DNA复制过程中可切割酶-DNA连接复合物的增加和稳定，并随后阻止双链断裂后核苷酸链的连接。Doxorubicin还形成氧自由基，导致细胞毒性继发于细胞膜脂质过氧化;氧自由基的形成也有助于蒽环类抗生素的毒性，即心脏和皮肤血管的影响。
