PEI又称为线性化聚乙烯亚胺，是人工合成的含有极高密度正电荷的有机大分子阳离子聚合物。PEI与DNA通过正负电荷的相互吸引形成复合物，这些复合物很容易通过内吞作用进入细胞。PEI-DNA复合物能很好地抵御溶酶体的降解作用，有效提高转染效率。PEI可作用于大至135000个核苷酸的质粒，所以较大的质粒也可以成功转染。目前市面上PEI转染试剂有很多种，Polysciences的PEI线性转染试剂适用于多种真核细胞，用途广泛。
